Lecturer from the College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah delivers a critical lecture at the Writers' Union in Basra.
As part of the University of Shatrah's scientific and cultural openness to cultural and literary institutions in Iraq, the Union of Writers and Authors in Basra organised a scientific lecture entitled:
«Breaking Taboos in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry – A Critical Reading of the Poem (On a Plate of Thought) by the Poet Abdul-Karim Al-Sheikh Salman».
The lecture was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Adnan Rasmi Yasser, a lecturer in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education for Girls – University of Shatrah, who addressed the concept of taboos in contemporary Iraqi poetry as an unspoken concept that derives its presence from cultural and social authorities that go beyond the limits of the literary text.
The lecturer chose the poem «On a Plate of Thought» by the poet Abdul-Karim Al-Sheikh Salman as an applied model for analysing the mechanisms of breaking taboos in poetry, reviewing the most prominent cultural and intellectual restrictions that some symbolic authorities may impose on texts and literary genres, and attempting to reveal the patterns of cultural repression that contemporary poetic discourse may face.
The seminar saw distinguished scientific and cultural interaction from the attendees, in the form of questions and critical interventions that enriched the dialogue on the subject of the lecture, as well as scientific praise for the lecturer in recognition of his research effort and his contribution to contemporary critical studies.
This participation comes as part of the efforts of the teaching staff of the College of Education for Girls / University of Shatrah to strengthen their scientific and cultural presence outside the university and to contribute to the literary and intellectual movement, reflecting the academic standing of the college and strengthening the bridges of communication between the university and cultural institutions in society.
